ancestry
This site offers subscriptions for various countries or a world-wide one.  It has a very large number of databases.

Ancestry also has a DNA site

findmypast
An excellent England and Wales site.  Its transcriptions of data are more accurate than those of ancestry.com  You are unlikely to come across howlers such as Maidstone, Kenya or Berlin, Warwickshire both of which we have seen on ancestry.com.  It has the UK census from 1841-1911 inclusive.  Pay-as-you-go or subscriptions at various levels.

IGI
The oldest source of free records.  This comes from the church of the Latter Day Saints and is an excellent source for parish records.

Over a million war dead

Names and photographs supplied by volunteers.  particularly good in USA and Canada. 

National Archives
